General concept
“A time to make friends ™” – this is the official motto of the FIFA World Cup 2006™. The UNESCO World Youth Festival is intended to bring the world to Stuttgart. With the regional support from numerous communities, organisations, associations, churches, institutions, companies and further partners in the Stuttgart region, the symbolic number of 2006 young people from all over the world will be invited to come to the Stuttgart region during the World Cup. The young people will be guests in the region of Stuttgart from Sunday, July 2, 2006 to Monday, July 10, 2006. The UNESCO World Youth Festival is intended as get-together program that focuses on sports and cultural exchange. The invitation of these young people is to establish numerous friendship-based relationships.
The active transfer of nationalities, languages and cultures is promoted with the objective of making international friends. The whole festival is presented under the auspices of the FIFA World Cup 2006™, which, in this region, culminates with the match for third place in Stuttgart on July 8, 2006.
Participants
The young people participating in the programme should ideally come from one of the 190 UNESCO member states. For organisational reasons, the involvement of all of the 190 countries is just as impossible to realise as an evenly distributed participation of countries. The participants should be between 16 and 21 years old. Moreover, all of them must have a basic knowledge of the English language. Before the background of the FIFA World Cup™, a certain affinity to sports is expected, which manifests itself in active and/or passive sporting activities. The young people are selected by institutions in the Stuttgart region that maintain relations with foreign countries. These institutions include, apart from the municipalities of the region of Stuttgart, all regional communities and associations, organisations, schools and churches with international relations. Moreover, companies that operate subsidiaries abroad are considered as well.
Accommodation
The UNESCO World Youth Festival is to promote a personal exchange in the field of sports and culture. For this reason, the young people are to be accommdated with host families. This will allow them to get familiar with the culture and hospitality of our region and also to make friends and establish contacts. Moreover, this idea corresponds to the mission of the UNESCO’s constitution of “advancing, through the educational, scientific and cultural relations of the peoples of the world, the objectives of peace and welfare“.
